Review of Old Joy (2006) by Jarrad R — 14 Jul 2007
In Gus Van Sandt's boring, plotless examination of quasi-Kurt Cobain's depressive heroin stupor, the quiet and slightly menacing beauty of the North-Western forest at least adds some scenic prettiness.
While Old joy revels in a style of film-making similar to Van Sandt's - slow, deliberate, observational - it manages to give the viewer some emotional weight to the gorgeous scenery. The film follows two old friends who are in very different places in life to where they once must have been and gently explores a bond between two men which seems like the smoldering coals left after a camp-fire.
"Worn out joy" indeed.
