Review of Mr. Church (2016) by T.j. P — 16 Sep 2016
Here's the thing with critics. They have become jaded. They watch so many movies looking for the bad, that's all they see. Sure this movie felt contained, but that was because the story is from the girl's POV and she respected the man to want to know more about him but kept her distance with his secrets, most of the time.
Eddie Murphy shines. People say he was all drama but there were funny elements from him and they were delivered in a way that fit the tone of the film. People talk about Murphy being too restrained but there's art in subtly.
Yes, there were elements that I wish could have been expanded on but in the age of binge watching on Netflix people are used to spending hours and hours with a character. This film managed to get me to care about all the characters in less than 2 hours.
There will be no sequel or franchise here but that's okay not all films made today need to be. This film is more about cherishing the ones you love.
