Review of Marwencol (2010) by Luke L — 26 Jan 2011
Bitter-sweet serendipity.
Certainly a triumph of what remains when everything gets beaten out of you.
There was the fear that the documentary aspect would be depressing but there's a wonderfully engaging story line that kept me so interested I almost cheered near the end when he changed his shoes.
...you'll see it's a personal freedom thing.
It starts even before the audience acknowledges it and it leaves you a very satisfying ending that lingers even after you left the theater.
This is entirely a director's victory.
As much as Hogancamp is to be appreciated for his art.
Malmberg is to be applauded for the astute vision that lead him to believe there was a story here, pursue it and to present it so entertainingly.
At a certain point you wonder if the subject matter would have fared so well in even the most capable hands of anyone else.
Besides the marvel that anything so tragic could result in such success, it's an interesting parallel of the muse to the master;.
We could all use a little Marwencol of sorts.
