Review of Martha (1974) by Paul K — 17 Jan 2009
Very powerful film. I was watching it on DVD and had to pause it to go to the toilet. Upon pausing it I could tell by the reader on the DVD that I was only one third through the film and Martha had been dealt so much fear and pain that I thought "Hell, what more sadism is there to come?" Answer: Lots! The male lead (Martha's husband) is terrifying.
This, for me, is true horror. Vampires and zombies are nonsense. You watch Martha and feel that such a thing could easily be happening to a stranger who lives on the same road as you. Thats the sort of horror that really affects.
