Review of Lucky Miles (2007) by Private U — 09 Jan 2009
A really fantastic experience. If you go into this movie cold, you would assume that it is a deep commentary on the politics of immigration in Australia, but it is actually intended as a comedy. There is plenty of social commentary on the plight of refugees, but this part of the story is portrayed in undertones that the audience can choose to engage in or not at their leisure.
People who do not know that this film is supposed to be a comedy will spend the first 20 minutes of the film stifling their laughter until they can hold it in no longer. The story centres around three people of different racial background, two refugees and one of the fisherman that brought them to Australia.
Hilarity ensues as they battle their way through the harsh Australian environment, tracked by three Australian Army Reservists. This second trio provide even more laughs, in one of the best films to be shot in Australia in recent memory.
