Review of Love, Gilda (2018) by Marilyn S — 23 Sep 2018
Loved loved loved "Love Gilda." A real inside story of a comic genius, with deep insight supplied by her diaries at various stages of her life. I expected the SNL and other sketches to be very entertainting, and was not disappointed.
I feared the movie, dealing with Radner's fatal cancer, would be a downer. But it isn't. Rather it is compassionate and inspiring. I was especially moved by Gilda's relationship with, and marriage to Gene Wilder.
I was equally moved by the bleaker periods in her life, her long-unfulfilled quest for love, her struggle with an eating disorder. It was also interesting to learn that Gilda was the first person to say "bitch" on tv and get away with it, because she was so charming and beloved.
She was also the first performer to make a cancer joke. Love Gilda is a heart-warming film, rightfully given the honor of opening this year's Tribeca Film Festival. I highly recommend it!
