Review of Lolita (1962) by Dano: The Preposterous Bard — 01 Oct 2008
Well I thought this movie was just amazing. The story and direction are good, but what really drives it and gives it a pulse is the screenplay and the acting. I've never seen so many performances at such a high caliber in one movie before! The almighty Peter Sellers having fun with a variety of characters, James Mason and Shelley Winters are perfect and Sue Lyon gives the best first performance I've ever seen! At two and a half hours this movie just flies right by.
I was also continually struck by just how sexually liberal they were finally allowed to be with this, even after all the controversy and endless struggles with censor board while it was being made. Leave it to Kubrick. Never a dull moment.
