Review of Lola Montès (1955) by Nate W — 03 Jun 2009
"Lola Montes", director Max Ophuls' last film, is a lavish biopic about the notorious 19th century courtesan told in flashbacks. The widescreen photography is colourful and kinetic, capturing all the detailed finery of the sets and costumes.
While the spectacle of the visuals is the movie's most lasting aspect, the subtlety of the visuals is not to be discounted, as Ophuls cleverly depicts Montes as a prisoner of her own trade throughout the picture.
