Review of Lady Macbeth (2016) by Robby K — 07 Sep 2017
As a period piece, art film, or a dark themed drama; "Lady Macbeth" works on all fronts and conveys a sense of both tragedy and uneasiness the entire time. Florence Pugh's central performance is one that should be universally lauded, and Director William Oldroyd's feature film debut succeeds on his ability to twist the story in a shape that's different, but not ridiculous.
Many side characters lack spirit, and the films motives seem to shift from beginning to end in a way that's somewhat off-putting. Luckily Lady Macbeth's ability to surprise and entertain wins out in the end.
Oldroyd and Pugh should be monitored closely, with their next projects much anticipated.
