Review of Kes (1970) by Lin S — 21 Oct 2007
Kes is one of the few films adapted from a book that is better. A novel by Barry Hines made into a film by Ken Loach, a story of a boy abused at school and ignored by his indifferent mother and cruel brother he finds solace in training his kestral and is befriended by the english teacher who sees potential in the poor lad.
Billy Casper played by David Bradley(his only film appearance to date) gives an unbelievable and amazing performance its heart breaking and funny in parts especially the bit of him trying to play in goal with over enthusiastic sports teacher(Brian Glover) shouting the odds.
A beautiful score by John Cameron deftly accentuates the contrast to his violent home life and the peace he finds flying his kestral. A must see.
