Review of Kaboom (2010) by Richard V — 10 Jun 2013
Gregg Araki often indulges in a sort of stylistic masturbation. Sometimes this is tedious to get through, but the man certainly knows how to whip up an immersive atmosphere, nowhere near as powerfully demonstrated as it was in 2005's Mysterious Skin, his masterpiece in my opinion.
Kaboom is bizarre, at times nauseating but always intriguing. Araki having fun with the camera and cheesy 80s style transition editing becomes us having fun with the camera and cheesy editing. He also knows how to use music to a chilling degree and I think it was done well in this film too.
It was enjoyable. Also, Juno Temple is a movie goddess. Believe it. Her presence, to me, is effortlessly passionate.
