Review of Holy Motors (2012) by James J — 28 Nov 2012
Wow. I've seen this twice and it consumes a lot of my thoughts. I've never seen a film by Leos Carax but this made quite the impact. It's deep on so many levels. The more I think about it, the more it reveals about itself.
This film is life, it is art, it is cinema at its most powerful, purest form. It's driven by a lead performance by Denis Lavant so intoxicating, funny, and masterful that I can't take my eyes off the screen.
He takes you seamlessly from one world to the next, shocking and surprising you each time. So many great moments, from the one-eyed "leprechaun" to the rousing accordion jam and everything else, really.
I can't praise this film enough. It is film perfection; surreal and transcendent.
