Review of Holy Motors (2012) by Michael L — 29 Jun 2013
Leos Carax's latest feature HOLY MOTORS is simply spellbinding cinema. HOLY MOTORS is that rare accomplishment that exists on multiple plains while making a strong comment on contemporary society, the power of film and storytelling, and the deep need for human connection.
Never has such a cinematic exercise also been so deeply moving. Like never before, Carax puts his strong aesthetic in service beyond the trivial to something truly profound. The film begins in what could have remained typical Euro regie theater but then HOLY MOTORS becomes something so different.
The film never ceases to surprise which makes it nearly impossible to write about. You don't want to give anything away risking that you will plant a seed of interpretation. So go in blind, and let HOLY MOTORS wash over you.
And rest assured, HOLY MOTORS will mean very different things to different people and that's a huge part of it's brilliance.
