Review of Hawking (2004) by Michael C — 30 Aug 2011
For a British TV movie, this was actually a pretty top-notch production. Sure it has some of the weaker supporting performances that is common with TV movies, but the film is driven by a stellar performance from Benedict Cumberbatch as the beloved astrophysicist.
The film is smart in that it chooses to not wallow in Hawking's current years being stricken with Lou Gehrig's disease, and instead focuses on his most productive years when he began developing his theories.
The film does reveal him struggling with the degenerative effects of the disease, for sure, and Cumberbatch's execution in portraying this ailment is pretty remarkable. This film is rather difficult to locate, but if you can get a hold of it its worth checking out.
It's a fitting, honest tribute to one of the greatest minds the scientific community has ever produced, and an excellent showcase for a gifted actor.
