Review of Gozu (2003) by Wes C — 01 Jan 2008
I owe this one to Donny. I'm of the mind that the same can be said for all of the films of Takashi Miike. Equal parts Dario Argento and Seijun Suzuki, he crafts some of the most brutally violent and sexually sadistic (leave it to Japan) films in the whole of cinema.
But one who is truely a lover of the cinema can not help but acknowledge the artistry behind his work. And for all of his gore and suffering Miike is very playful with this often finding humor in the most unlikely places.
Here is a man who churns out something like 3-5 films a year and truly carries the banner of the French New Wave through his D.I.Y. attitude while making his own unique scar on the cinematic landscape.
