Review of Funeral Parade of Roses (1969) by Jim L — 04 May 2008
Delirious mix of gay melodrama, Greek tragedy, documentary, avant guard, softcore porn and New Wave editing. A pretty young Japanese transvestite schemes to run the joint (s)he waitresses in; a step back, and the transvestite playing the transvestite is interviewed about making a skinflick or this film (or both) and hangs out with some experimental filmmakers, taking drugs and having orgies.
Reality soon disappears down the wormhole, but the truth remains that you're going to meet your fate. Some of the set design and editing effects (speeded-up footage with synthesised classical music played over the top) were clearly nicked wholesale by Kubrick when he came to make A Clockwork Orange the year after this.
