Review of Excalibur (1981) by Alfred D — 30 Jan 2008
Masterpiece! This film moves me like no other. The dialogue, though a bit stilted at times, SOARS when it fuses with the Richard Wagner score.
Boorman does an excellent job of compressing Mallory's Le Morte D'Arthur into a digestible film that nonetheless captures the core of King Arthur's Rise, Decline, and Redemption.
Nigel Terry is THE King Arthur. From Boy King to Aging Monarch his performance is astounding. And Nicol Williamson as Merlin is a tragic and beautifully comic character. The film is a truly spiritual experience.
