Review of Edvard Munch (1974) by Morten S — 07 Sep 2007
Phenomenal movie from Britain's most unfairly neglected director. Watkins sees Munch's art as being based in his economic situation, his early family life, and the conformist nature of Norwegian society.
The film brilliantly balances marxist and documentary approaches with a poetic sense of artistic creation. Anyone interested in art must watch this; it's extraordinarily intelligent and moving, as well as formally innovative and still unique.
