Review of Edvard Munch (1974) by Anonymous User — 14 Nov 2008
OH HI HERE'S A FIVE STAR MOVIE.
I finally saw the longer, near 4-hour version of this epic. Despite my hatred for any movie longer than two hours, this is a rare exception. My favorite biopic of all time, and one of my personal favorites.
The way it delves through every facet of Edvard Munch's (The Shriek) life that can possibly shape his work is effortlessly explored - his love life, his family, his acquaintances, his education, the social climate of Norway among others- I'm surprised I have never seen this style of pseudo-documentary a lot more in other biopics since it's such an effective method of storytelling. There are some undeniably boring parts, but if you just let it settle, it's as engaging as cinema gets. The subtle visual and auditory motifs get more familiar and make more sense as the nonlinear narrative moves forward. This is absolutely essential. A must see.
