Review of Dream Home (2010) by Doctor S — 10 Mar 2013
Extreme, graphically gruesome "true story" about a woman determined to buy a flat with a sea view in the outrageously expensive Hong Kong housing market. The movie's timeline jumps all over the place between 1991 and 2007 in an effort to help understand the woman behind the madness, but nothing can reconcile her relentless service of death.
I couldn't understand why she was doing what she was doing until the final scenes, and that explanation actually makes a lot of sense - at least, it might to a crazy person! So her murder-with-a-purpose revelation influenced me to bump up a half-star to a recommendable rating.
In truth, I am conflicted - the director knows how to make an audience squirm as the deaths in this movie are agonizingly slow and often feels exploitative. Proceed with caution, how you react to the opening scene should determine whether you continue as there are a dozen more of them to come.
