Review of Dracula (1958) by David B — 30 Dec 2013
Hammer took over from Universal Pictures in 1958 with this shocker which must have scared the hell out of viewers when it burst on to the screens. Beautifully filmed at Bray Studios this builds tension and is dominated by a marvelous performance by Peter Cushing backed by some very strong British character actors of the period including a very young and handsome Michael Gough later of Batman's Albert fame.
The pacing and art direction are certainly the highlights of this film. Some really visceral scares and this is my favourite version of Dracula (closely followed by Coppola's version with Gary Oldman.
If you get a chance watch on Blue Ray or HD.
