Review of Days of Glory (2006) by Raphael S — 11 Jun 2007
This is now one of my favourite WWII movies. It's a really interesting story that, to my knowledge, hadn't been looked at in film previously. It focuses on the mostly Arab, Muslim soldiers from the France's North African colonies and what they felt about fighting for a white, imperialist power, the injustices and discrimination they faced and how they dealt with it all.
The themes of post-colonialism and race-relations are really touchy issues in contemporary France (as well as other ex-imperial countries in Europe like the UK, Holland, Spain, etc). Interesting stuff.
