A chilling political film from wajda. incredibly well scored, excellent atmosphere about the french revolutionary who went against robespierre during his "reign of terror." it asks what the ethical limits of political power are.
it makes a surprisingly good case for dictatorship in opposition to democracy. that is the films largest strength, the fact that it does not try to reduce the pull of what it fights against, make it sound ridiculous and then lampoon it.
it gives, in this case in particular, the political difficulties of maintaining order in a young democracy real weight and then exposes the subtle pitfalls in such a situation.
