Review of Cold Souls (2009) by Arkadiy M — 05 Sep 2009
Forget the outdated postmodern exploration of John Malkovich?s mind. Paul Giamatti shows us that the metaphorical soul searching is all about the literal soul seeking. The writer/director Sophie Barthes did an exceptional job of using her surreal dream as inspiration for this film. I loved the juxtaposition of self-deprecating Woody Allen type humor with the ironic elements of Rezanov resembling Russian cinematography.
The bottom line is that Paul Giamatti does a top-notch job playing himself, with plenty of jokes and neuroticism to leave even the most capricious New Yorkers somewhat satisfied. Highly recommended to anyone who likes chickpeas or just wants to look deep inside Paul Giamatti?s peculiar soul.
