Review of Civic Duty (2006) by Loay O — 10 Nov 2007
Thriller that builds steam slowly...then the damn lid blows off. The story is well crafted. An American accountant bombarded with cable news and the media's fixation with terrorist plots in the post 9-11 world, receives a jolt when an unattached Islamic graduate student moves in next door.
It makes Peter Krause's obsession behavior and the build-up of the paranoia he has against his neighbor very believable, because you start to understand that his dissatisfaction is caused by more than just the 9-11 bombings.
For the liberal, the message appeared to be a warning call. The media instills fear in us - these days about terrorists hiding among us. Khaled Abol Naga makes a very convincing portrayal of a difficult character.
A nice departure from your usual Hollywood formula! Provocative film.
