Review of Charley Varrick (1973) by Derek G — 07 Jun 2007
Who knew the perpetually hangdog, wisecracking Walter Matthau- a man with a face tailor-made for comedy- could turn his hand so deftly to a serious role? He's 100% convincing as the titular felon, forced to use all his ill-gained experience to evade sleazy hired-gun Joe Don Baker (an unsettling presence throughout).
Every bit as good as Siegel's 'Dirty Harry'.
