Review of Carol (2015) by Eduardo C — 30 Dec 2015
Extremely powerful film stars Cate Blanchett as an elegant, wealthy married woman ( soon to divorce) with a very young daughter, and Rooney Mara as a young department store clerk discovering her latent sexuality.
What happens between them will simultaneously break your heart, uplift your spirits, and drive home with brutal clarity how utterly difficult it was to be homosexual in early fifties America. There is only one sex scene and it is very beautifully made.
There is a scene that repeats itself for extra gravitas but the best scene may be when Carol ( Cate Blanchett) lays it all out, baring her soul to her estranged husband who was about to take strict, sole custody of her daughter ( no visitation rights).
If Cate Blanchett goes on to win best actress it will be because of that scene.
