Review of Caramel (2007) by Bassam K — 02 Feb 2008
After the movie "Bosta" comes "Caramel." Apparently Lebanese talents don't "mass-produce" movies but they hit it right when they offer us a film, a chef d'oeuvre. Caramel offers vignettes of 4 independent women working in a beauty salon.
Not only did the director Nadine Labaky succeed in portraying the aging divorced woman battling the wrinkles and the old woman with dimensia, but also she pioneered the Arab cinema with a positive portrayal of lesbianism (a butch lesbian comfortable in her skin and a femme lesbian figuring out her way).
