Review of Boy Culture (2006) by Alexandpaul P — 01 Nov 2012
Interesting and recommended! A gay male prostitute named X (Derek Magyar) who shares a nice condo with two roommates Andrew (Darryl Stephens) and Joey (Jonathon Trent). X has a crush on Andrew and yearns for him but Andrew is not ready to commit to a prostitue.
Out of X's regulars, one customer in particular named Gregory (Patrick Bauchau) who is an older man takes X under his wing and is not willing to have sex with X until the attraction is mutual. Instead he opts to share a meaningful story with X during their sessions.
This story opens X's mind about his life and makes him reconsider certain things. I think critic Jason Anderson from Globe and Mail described the film perfectly: "Boy Culture is an undemanding but sufficiently engaging serving of smut and sentiment.
As such, it reclaims territory that queer cinema has largely ceded to TV shows like Queer as Folk, The L Word." Recommended!
