Review of Born to Be Blue (2015) by Jenna I — 10 May 2016
A love triangle between a man, his trumpet and heroin. This is one of those movies where the last five minutes really nails it home. As for the rest of the movie, the acting is uneven and it tends to veer towards cheesy too often to be truly solid-- where Love & Mercy got the flashbacks right, Born To Be Blue fluffs them too much to take seriously. I could have done without the forced love story... While I appreciated the limp attempts at making Jane three dimensional you spend most of the movie wondering what the character herself straight up asks: "what do women see in you?".
That said, it's an interesting journey with great music. And those last five minutes... Phew.
