Review of Bob Dylan – Don't Look Back (1967) by Bryan T — 30 Oct 2007
There's a hunger in me that this film feeds flawlessly, and it is this: A documentary without any narrative spine whatsoever. The fact that Pennebaker just sits back and lets Dylan tell the story through personality is ingenius and very hard to do.
The fact that this is just raw footage holding loosely together makes it that much more engrossing and haunting in ways I can't describe. Beautiful music throughout, and inexplicable complexities within its beautifully simple structure.
There's something about watching Bob Dylan through a grainy film filter that just gets to you. It's as if we can go back and observe his life for an hour and half, transgressions and all. When Dylan dies, this will be his eulogy.
