Review of Black Narcissus (1947) by Anne F — 09 Nov 2008
Powell/Pressburger's films have always have a sort of beauty to them but they are in full force here. This is such a beautiful film. From start to finish, you are bombarded with awe-inspiring images.
They're are so great at visual tricks and illusions that I didn't even know that it was all shot on sets. I truly believed they were in India. The story is something to behold. It's based in psychological drama as we follow these nuns as they are challenged in this foreign place but it turns into a frightening tale of jealousy and regret by the end.
The performances are all uniformly excellent especially by Kathleen Byron who gives a truly creepy and affecting performance. God,I still can't believe they weren't in India...
