Review of Atlantic City (1980) by Liz W — 03 Jul 2008
I think that I am not a Burt Lancaster fan, but perhaps I just dislike his early film. However, his later ones, like this one and Local Hero, are two of my favorites. In this film, Lou is a totally believable character, whom you learn about gradually as the film unfolds.
Although some of the characters (the gangster's widow, the hippy sister) are a bit over the top and unbelievable, Lancaster more than makes up for them. His character is clearly drawn, complex, and sweet in unexpected ways.
