Review of A Modern Affair (1996) by Colin L — 22 Oct 2013
A Modern Affair is a great romantic film, but this stems mostly from where the romance isn't. This film does a great job portraying the way relationships really work - there is no huge blow up conflict, grandiose "Say Anything" gesture, and then the two ride into the sunset. Rather, A Modern Affair takes a look at the fact that relationships can be messy, but there can still always be happiness and hope despite this.
The film is mostly a drama, but there are some snidely funny moments, which lends an intellectual sense of humor to the plot. A huge plus is Stanley Tucci's charisma throughout the movie, and Lisa Eichhorn's overall likability as an actress. It's interesting to watch Tucci as a young actor and in a very low key, honest role - a good foreshadowing of why he plays the roles he does not. Overall, this film is definitely worth the watch.
