Review of 71 Fragments of a Chronology of Chance (1995) by Alex E — 17 Aug 2007
In many ways, this film feels like a practice round for Haneke's later masterpiece Code Unknown, as both works confront similar themes. However, this is still a fully realized and deeply affecting film in its own right, one that trained a patient eye on the moments leading up to a random act of violence long before Gus Van Sant's grossly overrated Elephant.
Nowhere has Haneke's philosophy that "truth can only be viewed in fragments" been expressed so indelibly.
