Son of Pierre Ribes and Jeanne Bernadet, he has practiced theater since his youth and founded in 1966, the company of the Pallium, with the painter Gérard Garouste and the actor Philippe Khorsand. He created his first piece Strawberries muscled in 1970. He lived at that time Roland Topor, Jérôme Savary, Fernando Arrabal, Copi. In 1995, he received the grand prize of black humor with Jean-Marie Gourio for the show Counter culture. From 1997 to 2002, he hosted the event "Text nu" of the Avignon Festival, designed to promote contemporary playwriting. In 2000, two hundred playwrights are the foundation of the movement of the Writers associated with the theater, Jean-Michel Ribes, is elected president. In 2011, he actively supported François Hollande in the socialist primaries. March 13, 2012, he was assaulted by catholic extremists to Nancy, who throw a pie with feces in the face to the rest of the line in his theater piece by Rodrigo Garcia, Golgota picnic'.
