Review of Went the Day Well? (1942) by Tibor B — 19 Jun 2011
This is a terrific 1940s war film, and a great example of inspiring, exciting yet brutally realistic propaganda. The characters ay be quite loosely sketched but there is a palpable feeling of threat looming over the quaint English village.
Quite daring, and unstereotypical in that no character is safe and the film unflinchingly shows violence both on and perpetrated by innocents. The clipped acting styles do date the film of course, and the whole platoon of impeccably English speaking Germans pushes credulity but it certainly doesn't feel too old fashioned and the impact it must have had on release is clear.
