Review of Viridiana (1962) by Augustine H — 21 Dec 2013
Buñuel's satirical human comedy laid a sarcasm on the church for the memorable spoof of Da Vinci's Last Supper and the crumble of Christian symbols in disillusion. However, the resentful image of the poor is more impressionable to me.
Despite stereotyping the dark sides of the poor and drawing criticisms of class prejudice, Buñuel has indeed revealed the dark sides without magnifying the class struggle. Having adopted tonnes of symbolism, the film's ending is a compromise on secularism, revealing that divinity is a myth against human nature.
No wonder it is criticized by Vatican!
