Review of Vengeance Is Mine (1979) by Paul P — 23 Feb 2011
This is a film that gets psychopathy right on the nose. It will leave alot of viewers cold in how quick and to the point Enokizu is about deciding to end another persons life, as if its as easy as putting another quarter in a pinball machine.
Now the only flaw but maybe also its greatest achievement is there is no "Rosebud" to this film. Even the title doesn't make sense. You never find out what his long term goal is or why he starts doing what he does.
So the narrative isn't all that engaging. But its worth it for Ken Ogata alone. He isn't an over the top, madman serial killer. Instead he is cold. He doesn't act in anger. Often when he's smiling and calm he's at his scariest.
