Review of Ushpizin (2004) by John M — 12 May 2009
A lovely little film about adversity and faith, full of rich bold colors and accessible characters. It handles some very time-honored themes (the comedy of uninvited guests, the burden of getting what you wish for, and the tension between faith and impulse) in refreshing ways.
The ultra-orthodox are made very familiar in this fine film, although I think it odd that even in such a homogeneous society, their enclaves (a yeshiva of polish-descended hassidim, a synagogue for Iraqi jews) show that all sorts of tribal tensions are still at work.
