James Gray does gangster movies. He does gangster movies even when making romance movies. Or at least he focuses on the deceptive. The needy bits. The awkward desperation. All the core gangster movie conceits.
Best of all the style leads to nothing but the most necessary dialogue. None of the typical romantic verbal squirts I fear. If it really is Joaquin Phoenix's last movie, he chose a good one to go out on.
