Review of Turn the River (2008) by Vijay M — 28 Sep 2008
A low-budget drama that deserved a wider audience. It's a weensy bit slow pased, but still an exceptional drama showcasing Famke in a role that many will not have seen her play before. Rip is his usual gruff, tell-it-like-it-is asshole with a heart, and he's absolutely great to watch.
Jaymie doesn't really distinguish himself, which is a shame, but although everything is done *for* his character, the story isn't really much *about* him. Matt and Lois do nice jobs however, and are perfectly unlikeable and relateable.
The pool is nicely filmed, and kudos to Famke for doing all her own playing -- that last shot was absolutely incredible! I had to rewind it and watch it again! The film is a bit bleak and sad, especially when you think of what the main character is trying to do against all odds, simple though it is.
Great ending: I gasped when the credits started to roll.
