Review of Transamerica (2005) by Darren D — 12 Apr 2010
Being a woman on the verge of the final step of gender reassignment surgery must be challenging enough without having to contend with the news that a regrettable distant past one-night stand generated a son who is in the clink.
Mother/father and only recently discovered son try to bond during the course of that hallowed favourite of US indie cinema - the transamerican road trip. The usual quirky characters populate the journey, secrets are kept and revealed, and closure is finally achieved.
However, what makes this film stand heads and shoulders above its ilk is the sheer strength of story, characterisation and performance, and the welcome absence of melodrama and cheap histrionics. Highly recommended.
