Review of The Woman (2011) by Ruby H — 23 Oct 2012
Oh boy, feminists are gonna hate this. Or maybe they will love it..if they stick around until one of the most absurd climaxes in recent memory.
Meanwhile, there's crystal-clear social commentary, some beautiful shots and a very decent cast to carry the somehow unfocused script. There's also sadism and gore but not much scares. Just like Lucky McKee's other cult hit 'May' then.
This film has divided critics and it's understandable, but I have to say it it annoys me some when bad criticism comes from Horror critics. McKee's film has its flaws, sure, but its merits are greater. This is a unique feature that finely balances the macabre with suspense with a heavy dose of satire while also playfully nodding to the genre's fans.
And this is what this is: a horror film for horror fans.
