Review of The Witch (2016) by Yancey L — 15 Jun 2016
Might be the most perfectly put together horror film I've seen in years. The tension, not in the abundance of creepy things happening, but the lack of anything that's NOT creepy. Even the "family moments" are full of foreboding. Their puritanical certainty is turned inside out at every turn, and your left holding a bunch of loose ends, wondering what am I supposed to do with this. But don't worry. The pay off is wonderful in a terrible way (or vice versa).
Performances were flawless; even the little kids. Cinematography gave everything weight and mystery. It was a little difficult to follow the dialog at times, but that's because of the arcane 17th century English. Don't worry. You'll get everything you need.
I am absolutely flummoxed by the low audience score on RT. Guess there just wasn't enough CGI or spilling entrails for them.
If you love Rosemary's Baby or It Follows or 10 Cloverfield Lane, you will love this movie.
