Review of The White Countess (2005) by Hilary R — 09 Jul 2007
A very historical film yet at the msame time it does paint a rosy picture. I guess it is kind of like casablanca. Too bad it doesn't have that humor and subtleness. I really admire how the story of displacement particularly how politics, romance and intrigue can exist in such a place like 30s Shanghai.
It's kind of magical yet at the same time dire. I would suggest this film as a supplemnt to a modern Chinese history class. It helps frame the bigger picture.
