Review of The Virgin of Juarez (2006) by Douglas I — 25 Oct 2008
Found in the $1.99 bin at Blockbuster - we barely got our money's worth. My wife is a Minnie Driver fan and although I place myself in that camp as well - she was not a good reason to watch this film.
The story begins with a compelling plot (based on actual events) - solve the mystery: hundreds of women are being found in Mexican desert, brutalized and assaulted. Community advocated fight to motivate a corrupt police force to bring the pandemic to a close.
You're already intrigued right? Well, as the plot thickens, the movie takes a turn. A survivor becomes a beacon of hope, then a antemortem saint - a rally point to motivate the Christian masses. Sadly at this point the movie looses its self in a struggle between portraying the supernatural, following the real life events, and revealing the answer to the mystery.
The film degenerates into a mash of bad editing and low production values with a let down ending.
