Review of The Trip to Spain (2017) by Toby H — 13 Dec 2017
These films are fantastic. The Trip to Spain is the third installment of the Trip trilogy, a very much ad-libed highbrow series of comedies that showcase the impressive improvisational talents of Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as well as deservedly acclaimed director Michael Winterbottom.
Whenever these guys get together its a blast (scratch that) it's a trip. Pure hilarity. Everything about the Trip franchise is stingingly funny and feel good but also significant. Even with a premise and concept that is deliberately paper thin, all three of these films manage to achieve something of cinematic value/importance.
This is not your average Hollywood improv orchestrated by Judd Apatow that offers little more than Adam Sandler gibberish and Seth Rogan dick jokes. The Trip to Spain, much like its predecessors, is fueled by genuine charm, wit, heart, and a sense of humor that transcends conventional "funny.
