Review of The Queen of Spades (1949) by Anne F — 06 Mar 2010
Great forgotten British film in the shadow-full style of a much earlier silent Germanic horror; weirdly out of step with anything of its era.
The acting is at best ostentatious, the tone dial is stuck on 11 most of the time. The direction, design and photography are immaculately conceived! Sure the pace flags a little in the middle, but the ghostly, gloriously noisy and kaleidoscopic finale more than makes up for it.
