Review of The Mothman Prophecies (2002) by Matthew G — 11 Apr 2018
The conceptual pragmatism of the modern American critic and filmgoer will deny them the attitude and faculties necessary to appreciate such a film. As a lifelong student of dreams, I understand their language, logic, and role in waking events and synchronicities.
And I can tell you that what was depicted in this film smacks of the syntax of dreams and synchronicity. If the Mothman is real, he likely communicated with his targets by inducing a state of physiological arousal similar to the kind of beta stste we observe in dreamers.
The theory of Swuss psychiatrist CG Jung offers a rare opportunity to make sense of what happened in Point Pleasant (see archetypes and the collective unconscious). But "silliness" and other explanations for the script is an embarrassing show of intellectual laziness and existential timidity.
